Bone & Joint Center Membership Guidelines
Enrollment for membership in the University of Michigan Bone & Joint Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation Center (Bone & Joint Center) is open to all faculty, professional staff, and students of the University of Michigan, according to the following guidelines.
University of Michigan Faculty contributing to research, education, clinical care, or public policy in musculoskeletal injury prevention and rehabilitation are eligible to become members of the University of Michigan Bone & Joint Center. Professional Staff and Members-In-Training who participate in and support Bone & Joint Center activities are eligible for membership.
Membership Term: Membership in the Bone & Joint Center is for four (4) calendar years. Applications may be submitted at any time and will be reviewed monthly by the four-member Membership Committee consisting of: The Director and Associate Directors of the Bone & Joint Center and a Bone & Joint Center Planning Committee member.
Membership Renewal: Quadrennial membership renewal will be based upon participation in Bone & Joint Center activities per the responsibilities noted below for each category of membership.
GENERAL CRITERIA FOR MEMBERSHIP
- Research, educational, clinical or public policy expertise of relevance to musculoskeletal injury prevention, treatment, and/or rehabilitation
- A foundation in an area related to musculoskeletal injury prevention, treatment, or rehabilitation
- Demonstrated academic accomplishments or potential for such
- Demonstrated support for interdisciplinary collaboration
- Interest in contributing to the mission of the Bone & Joint Center
FACULTY MEMBERSHIP
Faculty Members should have a primary academic appointment(s) in a University of Michigan department (school/college), and salary support is the responsibility of that primary academic unit. Clinical revenue, as applicable, will remain within the member’s primary department. Grant dollars, as well as academic credit, remains within one of the member’s University departments.
Benefits of Faculty Membership:

- Opportunity to apply for Center’s funds for pilot project funding for collaborative research initiative or for funding of trainees
- Assistance in reviewing projects and grant submissions
- Opportunity to teach, mentor, and recruit undergraduate, postgraduate, and medical students, as well as residents and fellows from various medical specialties
- Access to large, diverse patient population(s) for approved research project
- Access to the Bone & Joint Center’s research, educational, and communications infrastructure, including screening, evaluation, data storage and management, electronic outcome monitoring, and various research and clinical cores
- Participation in ongoing symposia, colloquia, and research conferences
- Ability to post school/college/departmental musculoskeletal injury prevention and rehabilitation-related material on the Bone & Joint Center Website
- Professional biosketch on Bone & Joint Center Website
- Optional participation in Bone & Joint Center Speakers’ Bureau
- Eligibility to serve on relevant Center Boards and Committees
- Recipient of electronic news briefs and other Center publications
Responsibilities of Faculty Members:
Faculty Members are expected to participate substantially in Bone & Joint Center activities. Although members will occasionally have overlapping professional and personal obligations, all are encouraged to attend or participate in program meetings, appropriate committee meetings, seminars, symposia, public forums, and other Bone & Joint Center-sponsored activities.
Applicants for membership will be assessed with respect to how their work furthers the mission of the Bone & Joint Center:
To create new knowledge in all areas relevant to the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injury and arthritis, and to translate that new knowledge into optimal societal health, enhanced quality of life, functional mobility, and longevity.
Specific efforts can include any of the following:
- Contributing to the research, educational, clinical, and/or public policy goals of the Bone & Joint Center by (one or more of the following): Leading or serving on a Committee or participating on a Center-specific team; demonstrating ongoing scholarly work such as current/active grant support or publication or press coverage in the last four years; conducting educational outreach or increasing public awareness; or securing funding for collaborative initiatives
- Suggesting opportunities to translate relevant research advances to Center operations
- Attending and contributing to periodic meetings for the Bone & Joint Center
- Responding to Center inquiries as requested by Director, Associate Directors, or Center staff
- Collaborating with members of other disciplines on Center initiatives
- Communicating activities and opportunities associated with the Center to home department and school
- Recruiting students from home department and school/college for participation in Center activities
- Seeking to enhance national and international visibility for the Center and to identify new, innovative research and entrepreneurial opportunities
- Liaising with corporate and/or pharmaceutical partners when mutually desired
PROFESSIONAL STAFF AND MEMBERS-IN-TRAINING MEMBERSHIP
Professional Staff includes, for example, physical therapists, occupational therapists, athletic trainers, physician assistants, nurses, or administrators. Members-in-Training include students, post-doctoral fellows, medical or surgical residents or fellows, or anyone enrolled in University of Michigan training programs.

Responsibilities of Professional Staff Members and Members in Training:
- Contribution to the research, educational, clinical, and/or public policy mission of the Bone & Joint Center (e.g., patient care, administration, education, or research)
- Attendance at or participation in at least one (1) Bone & Joint Center meeting or selected educational function every two (2) years
- Willingness to be contacted for participation in other Bone & Joint Center activities (e.g., research, educational, clinical, or fundraising)
